即便张安已经是美国奥运历史上成就最高的乒乓球运动员,她依然逃脱不了来自传统亚裔家庭的压力。“乒乓球运动员不是稳定工作。”
张安(Lily Zhang)有美国乒乓球女王之称,她六次拿下全美冠军,四次参加奥运会,正处于运动生涯的巅峰期。因为今年才28岁,这位出生于加利福尼亚州的选手不禁憧憬着自己在2028年洛杉矶奥运会主场作战的样子。
但她的父母却没有那么兴奋。
“我们一直都在劝她别打了,”她的母亲Linda Liu说。“我们就希望她能有份正常工作。”
事实证明,就算是美国历史上成就最高的乒乓球运动员,也难以逃脱父母在求职方面给与的压力。
追求非传统意义上梦想工作的子女与推崇朝九晚五工作的父母之间的冲突由来已久,奥运会则提供了一个独特的观察视角。对张安来说,除了需要忍受父母频繁且不请自来的职业建议外,最令她困扰的一点,就是她自己也承认父母说得有一些道理。
尽管有西蒙娜·拜尔斯(Simone Biles)和迈克尔·菲尔普斯(Michael Phelps)这样的运动员能将奥运成就转化为大笔财富,但在关注度没那么高的项目里勉强度日的运动员更多。他们独自乘坐经济舱奔赴遥远的国际赛场,争夺微薄的奖金和赞助。
一串连败或一次韧带撕裂就可能断送职业生涯。“可能让你瞬间失去稳定生活的意外太多了,”张安说。
具有讽刺意味的是,最初正是母亲Linda Liu和父亲Bob Zhang帮助张安成长为一名乒乓球巨星的。作为中国移民,这对夫妇希望让下一代传承祖国的“国球”。因此,在她家位于帕洛阿尔托的那套狭小公寓里,一张乒乓球桌“身兼两职”。
“那也是我们的餐桌,”张安说。“铺上桌布就可以吃饭了。”
